How to Convert Your Garage? 5 Easy Tips from Professionals
If you’re wondering how to convert your garage, you’re certainly not the first and won’t be the last either! NBC Construction have helped a lot of people convert their garages so we have a fair amount of experience in this area. We’re hoping we can point you in the right direction with these 5 easy tips – it can be overwhelming when you start out, after all!
1) Confirm Planning Permission
Garage conversions generally count as permitted development, so usually will not require any planning permission before construction. However, all developments must comply with planning conditions which are outlined by your local planning authority. As always, projects on listed buildings or that take place in conservation areas will need special permissions before they can continue.
2) Check Your Garage is Suitable
If your garage is in a state of disrepair, a conversion may not be an option for you – rather, a complete demolition and rebuild may be more appropriate if the damage is that bad. Many clients forget that converting your garage into a habitable space requires that it must comply with building regulations to improve the spaces energy efficiency.
3) Plan Ahead
You’ll want to think about what you’ll be using your garage conversion for before you can plan it properly; popular choices include offices, studios, playrooms, home gyms, utility rooms and media/entertainment centres. You’ll need to consider window positioning, lighting, drainage, doors, ventilation, power, heating, and more.
We have our own architectural services that can assist you with plans and building regulations.
4) Set a Budget
Setting a budget is vital for any project – you need to know what you can afford to avoid future disappointment and unfinished or shoddy work. Be realistic about your figure and try to balance what you want with what you can afford.
5) Hire Professionals
A garage conversion is not the time to resort to DIY, and can lead not only to a poor job, but can end up lowering the value of your home as a result! A lot more goes into converting a garage than moving furniture and adding a lick of paint, and making sure you have a competent team is paramount.
The construction team you choose will be responsible for insulation, raising the flooring (and possibly the ceiling!), security, rewiring and more. They’ll also ensure that any work undertaken is up to building regulations and is completely lawful and safe – a project like this is something you never want to cut corners with.
